2023.1.27
In recent years, as the number of foreign residents in Japan has increased, so has interest in how to achieve a cohesive intercultural and inclusive society. In order to live together with people from diverse backgrounds, the use of "plain Japanese" as a means of providing information is being promoted in many fields, along with efforts to support multilingualism, and there is a growing need to develop new Japanese-language materials with content more suited to everyday situations and to support learners.
In order for a diverse group of people ―native speakers and non-native speakers ― to live together using the Japanese language as a communication tool, the key is not for a few to make an effort, but for everyone to take small steps to meet halfway. In this special feature, we use several cases to consider what each of us can do.
